MINUTES OF EAST
CORNWALL AND WEST DEVON ATHLETIC FORUM HELD ON 4th NOVEMBER 2002

Prior to meeting starting a minutes silence was held
in memory of Richard Bristow.
Hoe 10: Paul
advised that entry forms were now out and been modified to incorporate the Logo
of Pertemps who were sponsoring the Devon Race Series 2003 of which the Hoe 10
is the first event. Letters to be sent to Police, Council ref Brickfields and
Road Closure, St John Ambulance and Sutton Harbour Holdings. Agreed to medals as
mementos- to be ordered along with race numbers and fun run medals. Running
press have been informed. Agreed to allow for 600 in 10 mile event.
Track and Field
Meeting: A pre meeting had been held of interested parties with the following
agreement:
Each club would maintain its own autonomy for
local and County competitions and each club should affiliate to their own
respective County Associations. Each Club should not affiliate to SEAA for Track
and Field. For the purposes of the Southern League competition the Forum will
have the opportunity to form an elite composite squad/team. A Team management
selection panel will be formed in addition to overseeing squad training made up
of one representative from each active club. A name for the team is still to be
decided.
Coaching to support the elite squad, athletes
will be given the opportunity to progress through a series of levels based upon
ability, times, distance, height etc (performance at training, school, club or
competition).
Actions for next meeting: Create an up to date
listing of coaches and officials, create a coaching programme, create an events
diary.
Mob Match: Following
the presentation at the last meeting from Pete Sargent correspondence had been
received from Pete stating that there had been no buy in to the idea at the
present time by the Cornwall Clubs.
Sportshall: To
be held at Lipson Community College Wednesday 13 November 4-30 6-30pm,
assistance was requested.
Race Directors
Meeting: Held
at Exeter on 21 October, disappointing turn out. Next one due to be held in
April 2003. Agreed dates/venues for Pertemps Devon Race Series and County
Champs.
UK:A Forum:
Reminder given on forthcoming meeting at Ivybridge CC Monday 18 November 7-9
Devon Road
Relays: Paul
reported on a successful inaugural event at West Point with 30 teams taking
part. Plan to make it an annual event. Interest being shown by clubs outside the
region in coming along to take part.
Coaching
Workshop: In
Plymouth on 8 December.
Coaching: Leaders
Award Fitness in Running and Walking course to take place in Plymouth 15
February 2003, venue still to sort. Book with Bill Whistlecroft.
Level 2 Course also planned for New Year.
Level 4
Coaching Course: Bath Course cancelled
Any other
business:
SEAA Cross
Country Championships: Bicton Park Saturday 25 December 1100. Local Clubs are encouraged to enter as this provides a good opportunity
to raise the profile of athletics in the South West. CLUBS ARE REMINDED THAT THE
CLOSING DATE FOR ENTRIES IS TUESDAY 10TH DECEMBER.
Active Sports: Nigel
made ref to the letter received with County Minutes and the newsletter from
Sonia that Athletics in Devon had been brought forward in the Active Sports
Programme. The programme aims to increase participation in athletics in the
county by targetting 10-16 year olds. There is a need to obtain to obtain a
lottery grant of £20,500 that the County has to raise £4500 and clubs are
being asked to donate. The programme lasts longer than one year but is expected
to be self funding once up and running.
DML XC League: First
meeting at Filham Park at Ivybridge, Sunday 16th December, open to
all clubs across all age groups. 50P entry fee, U11s will be a fun run.
Burrator
Training Run: Boxing
day at the Dam 1100, normal format, bring a present for the sack, pick one out
on completion of run. Prizes for Fancy Dress.
Steve Rose advised that Plymstock RR will be
treadmilling for Children in Need at Safeway, Plymstock on 15 November all are
welcome to support. He also advised that Plymouth Albion Rugby Club was
available for meetings.
Neil McClung advised that the Tavy 7 entry limit of
400 was rapidly filling up. He also advised of traffic and parking plans for the
day.
Paul advised that Officials bibs had been received
and cones were in course of supply and would be available for any events.
Nigel advised that the Forum were going to host the
Devon County Track and Field Championships at Brickfields on May 11 and 12 2003.
Help will be required to plan and assist on the day. It was also planned to host
a Devon League event (which is open to all) on a date to be arranged.
Keith Reed thanked all clubs, on behalf of Erme
Valley Harriers, for their letters of condolence and attendance at the funeral
following the tragic loss of Richard Bristow as Club Chairman. It was agreed
that the Forum would make a donation to Richards Memorial collection. Keith read
out a letter from Monica, Allister and Nicholas Bristow, copied below:
Dear Friends
Thank you all for your cards of condolence. It has
been a great comfort to me to know that Richard was so well thought of in the
running community.
I was very touched that so many runners came to pay
their respects on Wednesday. One of Richards greatest achievements was the money
he helped to collect for Children in Need, so I am sure he would have been
please with the donations, which I believe are somewhere in the region of £1000.
Again, thank you all for your kind words and sharing
so many wonderful memories with me.
