EAST CORNWALL
AND WEST DEVON ATHLETICS FORUM
MINUTES OF
MEETING HELD ON MONDAY, 9TH FEBRUARY 2004
Present: N
Rowe (Chair); P Ross (EVH); M & J Elliott/F Jenkins/B Aloof (IS);
C Bunting/B Phillips (TT); A Erith/A Smyth (ECH); J Crockford/C & C
Ede (DML); N McClung/K Bowles (TRR); S Endacott/C Carpenter (PAC);
S Rose/D Dane (PRR); C & J McGhee/R Warne (PH)
Apologies: K Reed/M
Erith/A Sparrow/G Sansom
With
the exception of the date, the minutes were agreed as being a true and accurate
record.
Brickfields: N Rowe advised that events training schedules need sorting
ASAP. David Young is going down next
month to be involved in discussions about development of the site, along with
Active England. Some discussion about
requirements and for installation of a second cage. Cost between £8-10k but would be limited to discus.
C Carpenter asked when the track would be
graded. N Rowe advised that it had
already been graded and the certificate will be held by the Council. PAC have booked 4 April and 20 June for young
athletes. Calendars for the year are
being compiled so it would be useful to get events in as soon as possible. Training nights are the same as last year
but starting earlier on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
N Rowe will send PAC an email with the dates we had
last year and will set something up at similar times.
J Crockford said we have been billed £102 despite us
only using Brickfields on Saturday mornings.
If they see athletes using the track they tend to think they must be
with the Forum and bill us accordingly.
This is an interim problem and should be resolved once it is managed
properly. N Rowe will request a
breakdown to ensure we have been charged correctly. If anyone uses Brickfields please let J Crockford or PAC know.
Marathon seminar dates – 23rd February
and 29th March.
There are still clubs who have not updated N Rowe on
coaches and officials. It would be
useful for coaches to integrate more.
K Reed is hosting an officials course on 6th
March, 10-2, across track, field, timekeeping and road race officials. There is an exam for track and field. Might be 30 minute test for road running.
Hoe 10: 380+ entries to date.
Everything appears to be in place.
Still require more marshals as we are 7 short. Albion are giving us great support. Refreshments will be available from 8.30 and lunches will be
served later. Everything will be
centralised in the Coors Bar. Please
point your athletes to the car park in Kings Road.
Cross Country: PAC sent 4 athletes. One
of the under 13 girls came 23rd.
In the SW Schools Championship last weekend Jo Harvey (EVH) won her
race. PAC had one lad who came 4th.
Westward
League: Will continue next year. Managed by Exmouth -Harriers. Events will be around about the same as they
are now. The next race is at Paignton
on Saturday, 14th February.
Plymstock Road Runners and their link up with
Plymstock and Coombe Dean Schools is
working well; building up slowly.
PR had a request from Teignbridge Trotters to use
our clock for 5 events in 2004/05. 2 of
the events clash with Forum events.
This year we charged £100 for 3 events – agreed to charge the same
again.
The Teignbridge 10 is being charged £600 for Police
support (3 regular Police plus specials).
They challenged the Police but with little joy. They spoke to P Ross and the policeman from
the race directors’ meeting. P Ross
heard today that the Great West Run will be charged £1,500. This is the patch of the police officer who
denied there would be any charges.
Steve Swanee said if an event was for charity,
development of athletics or a long-standing arrangement then they would look
leniently upon us. Pete Furleigh of the
GW Run is meeting with Steve Swanee this week.
P Furleigh has suggested they give them at least 12 months’ notice as
the only people who can pay for these charges are the runners.
The Police are looking at 100% cost recovery. This will affect any event that takes place on the road, not just running.
M Elliott mentioned the half marathon disco. N Rowe felt it would not be cost effective
as buffets at the Civil Service start at £4.95.
J Crockford advised that only two clubs had paid
their £10 affiliation fees.
N McClung introduced Keith Bowles. Tavistock have some activities going with
Active Sport for primary school aged athletes at Tavistock.
Dave Dane has taken over from Colin Nunn as the
secretary of Plymstock Road Runners. He
asked for information on clubs’ London Marathon trips.
A Erith said a flyer was available advertising
Mike’s marathon seminar.
P Ross has updated the contacts list for the group
which will be put in the public domain.
N Rowe has produced notes of his trip to Sweden with
UKA. All governing bodies are following
Government policy in this new game plan.
For the first time, sport is coming 2nd
to health. Getting more people active
in sports for 30 minutes, 5 times a week is the aim.
We need to remember we are multi-disciplined and
need to get people interested and worry about competitions at a later date.
We need to stop this flow of athletes from Plymouth
to Exeter and need to get this composite club off the ground for next year.
Plymouth and West Devon Primary Schools Cross
Country will take place on 23rd March, 2-3 pm at Coombe Dean. Help would be appreciated. 14th and 16th June 1
-5 pm will be Primary Schools Athletics at Brickfields – this is in danger
of folding if we do not come together with officials, help etc. Each school has to give 2 teachers to make
it happen. Would appreciate help from
PAC for refreshments.
Club Development Workshop – 11th May @
Windsor House.
Club Development Planning meeting on Friday, 26th
March, run by England Athletics. Venue
to be confirmed.
Indoor sports hall – School Sports Co-ordinators
started the ball rolling for us. The
next event is 16th March, 7.30 pm at Plymstock, for the Plymstock
family of schools. Other events –
