It was agreed the minutes were a true reflection of the previous meeting.

Nigel congratulated everyone who took part in yesterday’s London Marathon.

MATTERS ARISING

Brickfields:  The problems we were having with the hammer caged have been resolved.  A groundsman will be on duty for all bookings in future.  Repair to cover damaged by vandals is in hand.  Football problem sorted; it has been accepted that athletics takes priority over football in the athletics season.

P Ross wrote to Richard Speare of PAC and has received a nice letter back from his father offering his apologies.

M Erith reiterated that you are to call 999 if someone collapses during a race as opposed to after a race.

Profits from the Hoe 10:  M Erith suggested the purchase of a collapsible bath where runners can cool their legs off after a race.  He is looking into the cost of this.

P Ross said a donation has been sent to St Johns Ambulance but disappointingly they have not heard anything back.

Track and Field:  A mail shot has now been sent out to schools.  It will be a good idea for the sub-committee to reconvene in the future to see how it is working out.  C Carpenter said they have not seen anyone who they have not expected to see.  S Endacott said due to good numbers Tuesday to Thursday they could do with a spring coach.

County Championships:  10/11 May 2003.  Things are heading in the right direction.  Volunteers needed.  Do not need commitment for both days or even whole day, if anyone can spare half day it would be appreciated.

C Carpenter said they are still looking for athletes to compete.  They cannot get enough athletes to do both Southern Ladies and National Youth Leagues.  First league competition on 28.4.03.  First National League competition on 4.5.03.  Under 17 maximum age group for boys and girls.  The governing bodies are not making this easy for us.

P Ross said we are holding County track and field championships and 10k track championships on the evening of 10.9.03 at Brickfields.

Child Protection Courses:  One was held on 27.3.03 which was oversubscribed.  Devon clubs can claim money back.  Course also held last week at Marjon.

Plymouth Half Marathon:  Entry to date just under 1300.  Looking at being close to 3000.

Officials:  Conference held.  Course fairly well attended.  Officials for County Championships sorted out.  Will need officials for Devon League in June.

M Erith had about 25 people at his seminar.  Tamar Trotters had already gone to Paris.  If he does it again he could do one in December to plan training, one later to see how training is going and then one nearer the race.

City Centre Mile:  Entry forms available.  Day after half marathon – Monday 26 May.  Closed roads.  Later start so hopefully there will be more atmosphere.  Lord Mayor’s Day theme is “pantomime”.

County Half Marathon Championships:  Devon team did very well at the event held at Wilmslow.  Stuart Hall came 10th and did a PB.  Team came 5th overall.

Race Directors’ Meeting:  28.4.03, 7.30-9 at Exeter Harriers’ clubhouse.

Hire of Clock:  Cheques from Teignbridge Trotters and Dartmoor Vale Marathon received.

ANY OTHER BUSINESS

P Ross said on the Plymouth Half Marathon there will be lots of bands and entertainment on the course.  He needs 60 marshals.  Volunteers appreciated.  Disco on the Hoe Promenade in a marquee - £3/ticket.

Plymstock Road Runners asked Paul to bring up about the SEAA membership schemes.  N Rowe felt it might have more impact if it had come from UKA.  Sport England have a moratorium on spending.  Obviously needs to be discussed within clubs.  They have not said whether the club affiliation would be reduced.  The £5 fee includes personal injury insurance and all runners over 11 are eligible.

P Ross said there were good local results in the Devon 10 mile championships and marathon championships.  Well done to everyone concerned.

J Crockford asked if we had decided how we were going to collect fees at the track.  S Endacott keeps a register on Tuesdays and Thursday and then give a list each month.  C Carpenter and J Crockford to liaise monthly.

No bill has yet been received from the school for the winter months.

D Hatch mentioned Jeremiah’s Journey, a charity in Devon for children and young people who have to deal with bereavement.  Moorhaven are putting on a race on 21.6.03 at 7 pm to raise money for the charity.  Permit applied for.  The charity is also doing their own event in Cann Woods (near Elfordleigh Hotel) on 2.8.03, 5 miles, 6.30 pm start (entry forms available from F Elford).

C Ede said some DML members have asked him to raise the issue of a Plymouth Harriers member phoning up a radio station asking for London Marathon entries.  M Erith suggested we write to all member clubs and discourage this activity.

K Reed has entry forms available for the Ivybridge 10k.  Grand Prix results up-to-date and will be circulated with minutes.  Pete Walmsley and Pat Picket ahead so far.  Next month we can decide how many races we are doing.

DATE OF NEXT MEETING

Monday 12th May 2003.
