St Lukes 'Run the shops' Relay
As you may
already have heard, in Olympic year, 2012, it is the intention to run the St.
Luke's 'olympic' style torch, in a relay, from the hospice at Stamford Road
Turnchapel. After visiting all the St Luke's shops in Devon and Cornwall, the
relay will finish on the Saturday afternoon in Plymouth City Centre. The aim is
to raise funds for the hospice and also to promote the work done by this
charity.
The day/dates
are Thursday, Friday and Saturday 26th, 27th and 28th April 2012. This prevents
clashing with the Easter weekend and the London Marathon. Plus the 'official'
Olympic torch relay begins on 19th May at Lands End, arriving in
Plymouth the same day.
There are at
least 34 shops in the area as far afield as Kingsbridge, Tavistock, Callington,
Launceston, Torpoint and obviously within the confines of Plymouth. A full list
of shop locations can be found on the St Luke's web page http://www.stlukes-hospice.org.uk/index.aspx
To enable this
event to be successful, we hope that runners from the clubs in the area will
carry the torch on it's various stages. It is envisaged that the event will take
place over three days, as the distance between the hospice and the outlying
shops back to the City Centre, is approximately 120 miles. This all has to take
place within shop opening times, ie 9am-4.30pm, to gain maximum involvement with
the public. However, runners in certain instances maybe required to commence
their leg at 08.30 hours. Participants can run as individuals, as part of a
group or club and may run more than one stretch if desired.
Everyone taking
part will be requested to wear a specially designed technical t-shirt, costing
approximately £5, showing the shops visited, and list all the relevant details
including the JustGiving and TextGiving information.
There will also
be a commemorative medal for each runner.
